Idle Air Control Valve for the 2006 Mitsubishi Jolie is a vital component in fuel-injected vehicles, regulating engine speed (RPM) during idling. It’s a key part of the idle speed control system. In fuel-injected engines, the throttle solely manages air intake, operating in a cyclical fashion.
Upon engine startup, the Engine Control Module (ECM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM) assesses factors like engine coolant temperature, ambient air temperature, and (in some models) atmospheric pressure to determine the optimal air-fuel mixture for ignition. Crucially, the gas pedal remains unpressed during starting in fuel-injected engines, meaning the throttle is fully closed. The idle air control valve supplies the necessary air intake when the throttle is closed and the engine isn’t yet running.
The idle air control valve precisely regulates the air bypassing the throttle when the accelerator isn’t depressed, maintaining appropriate idle speed under various engine conditions. A malfunctioning valve results in inaccurate air intake, potentially causing elevated RPM. Two primary valve types exist:
Rotary Solenoid (Duty-Control Rotary Solenoid)
This valve employs a rotating mechanism to control air flow based on PCM signals. Unlike stepper motor valves, a spring keeps it closed until the ECU sends a duty cycle signal to energize the coil. This alters the current flow, moving the valve to open or close proportionately. A high duty cycle opens the valve, while a low duty cycle closes it. A circuit failure causes the valve to open to a default position (approximately 1000-1200 RPM) due to a permanent magnet.
Stepper Motor Type
Here, a stepper motor positions an air guide valve, controlling air intake via precise steps (often 125). More steps equate to greater airflow. Failure leaves the valve in its last position. Since carbon buildup is common, the ECM/PCM calibrates the valve by cycling it fully open and closed. Excessive air intake during the fully closed phase triggers a check engine light, indicating cleaning or replacement is needed.
