Function of the Expansion Valve

The Kia Sorento’s refrigerant expansion valve is a crucial component of the vehicle’s air conditioning system. Imported directly from France, it controls the angle of an inclined disc, determining the size of the opening and subsequently the refrigerant flow rate (and therefore the compressor’s output). A higher voltage applied to the valve results in a smaller opening, and vice-versa. A 12V supply closes the valve completely.

The Electronic Control Unit (ECU) manages the valve’s operation. It receives data from various sensors, including ambient temperature, interior temperature, and refrigerant pressure sensors. Based on this data, the ECU supplies a corresponding voltage to the valve, controlling the refrigerant flow and maintaining the desired cabin temperature. The compressor operates at its highest capacity when the disc is at its largest angle; when the disc is perpendicular to the compressor body, the compressor effectively shuts off.

The expansion valve maintains a specific voltage range to adjust the opening between the discharge and control chambers. A larger opening corresponds to lower voltage and vice versa. When the A/C is switched on, a duty cycle (variable voltage) is supplied to the valve, narrowing the opening to reduce pressure in the discharge chamber, ultimately influencing the angle of the inclined disc and refrigerant flow. This system allows the compressor to regulate refrigerant flow to maintain the desired temperature.
