The high-pressure fuel pump return valve for the 2013 KIA SORENTO plays a crucial role in the vehicle’s fuel system. Its function is to precisely regulate fuel pressure before it reaches the engine’s injectors. Located at the high-pressure pump’s outlet, this valve maintains consistent fuel pressure, especially during high-speed engine operation. It prevents excessive pressure build-up by releasing excess fuel back to the pre-delivery pump when the pressure in the distribution pipe is lower than the piston pressure. This pressure differential overcomes the valve’s spring, allowing fuel to bypass. Fuel is then transferred via the supply pump to the SCV valve and subsequently to pistons A and B. These pistons reciprocate, drawing fuel from the supply pump into the high-pressure chamber and the distribution pipe. The eccentric cam’s rotation dictates the pistons’ up-and-down movement.

This valve’s operation is managed by the engine control unit (ECU) via a duty cycle. A consistently pulsed electrical current, with the current’s effective value determining the valve’s aperture, regulates its function. A higher current value results in a wider opening, while a lower value reduces the opening. Small SCV valve openings (brief power supply) restrict fuel flow, while larger openings (extended power supply) increase fuel flow. In both cases, fuel pumping commences when pressure surpasses the distribution pipe pressure.
